Peter Carras, Director of Operations

We’d like to officially welcome Peter Carras to the Computer Reach team. Peter is now our Director of Operations. His duties include assisting with computer inventory, volunteer event logistics and serving as a right-hand-man to our leadership team.

Peter is a long time Apple enthusiast and Monroeville’s County Of Westmoreland Macintosh Users Group (COWMUG) leader, a University of Pittsburgh neuroscientist and has been a volunteer computer recycler with us for many years.

We’d also like to extend a warm welcome to Ted Rodgers, our new Director of Technology. Ted is a Unix expert and long time leader of the local Linux user group in Pittsburgh.  He is a University of Pittsburgh graduate and steady technical leader at our volunteer events.  He has special skills in large deployments of Linux via customized imaging

processes. Ted was also instrumental in forging our relationship with the Western PA Linux Users Group and the new ITT relationship (stay tuned for more news on that partnership later!).

We look forward to sharing more news of how Peter and Ted are helping Computer Reach meet our mission of saving the world, one recycled computer at a time.

Electronic Waste In Ghana… No More?

We pulled this from a 2008 article on Greenpeace.org. We have come a long way from 2008 to 2012. With USA firms like Computer Reach  partnering with established computer support companies like Africa ICT Right , we can see hope. We still rely on donors and volunteers like you to make a difference.

The ever-growing demand for the latest fashionable mobile phone, flat screen TV or super-fast computer creates ever larger amounts of obsolete electronics that are often laden with toxic chemicals like lead, mercury and brominated flame retardants. Rather than being safely recycled, much of this e-waste gets dumped in developing countries. Previously, we have exposed pollution from e-waste scrap yards in China and India. Nigeria has also been identified as a dumping ground for old electronics.

During our investigation into the shady e-waste trade, we uncovered evidence that e-waste is being exported, often illegally, to Ghana from Europe and the US. We visited Ghana to investigate workplace contamination from e-waste recycling and disposal in the country.

In the yards, unprotected workers, many of them children, dismantle computers and TVs with little more then stones in search of metals that can be sold. The remaining plastic, cables and casing is either burnt or simply dumped:

Compare that story to our recent work with ACCRA in Ghana.

10 Ways To Convince Your Employees To Recycle

Our organization revolves around recycling but we can’t do it alone. What we need is to get larger organizations on board with the big -picture goal. The problem so far has been that it’s another job for someone to take, and no one wants more work. Here are a few good ways to help make your employees want to recycle.  Also check out this article called 5 Steps To A No Waste Business.

Shiloh Church Project

Computer Reach served a small country church in South Park, PA called Shiloh Church.  They have hosted a food bank for the past 37 years as well as women’s ministries, teen after school and summer programs and much more.  Alma Gilliam, mother of pastor Jerrel Gilliam, contacted Computer Reach about the Tabitha Women’s Ministry in Lowe Hall needing computers for job training.  On Sunday May 27, 2012 we assembled a team of 6 Computer Reach volunteers and they added 10 church helpers to install 10 G4 computers.  Rick Fitzgibbon and Dave Sevick will be back in a few weeks for further training and support of their staff.
